A Branding & Package Design Success Story for a Craft Spirits Company

Long-time vintners, lovers of spirits and enamored by gin, Gerry Rowland and Susan Doyle capture the essence of each ingredient to craft spirits with spirit. Using foragers and wildcrafters, they find herbs at peak maturity. The ratio of each ingredient affects the synergy of the final aromas and flavors. A botanical mix that looks good on paper may not succeed, and only taste will tell. Wine generously allows you three to four weeks during the fermentation to get it right, while gin only gives you eight hours to bring out the individual character of the botanicals. They were prepared for the challenge, after harvesting and bottling 48 vintages of wine in three countries.

CHALLENGES

Gerry was a renowned winemaker who wanted to start a spirits company. He needed help creating a brand to enter one of the world’s most competitive markets: distilled spirits. The entrepreneur and his partner, Susan, needed a brand name, bottle design and online presence that echoed the spirits they were just starting to produce.

SOLUTIONS

LUMINESSEE collaborated closely with Gerry and Susan to create over 573 potential brand names.
Ultimately, the entrepreneurs selected the name “Coit Spirits,” to reflect the alcohol’s San Francisco Bay Area origins.
Coit Tower is an iconic landmark, donated to the city by the trail blazing volunteer firefighter of the roaring 20’s, Lillie Hitchcock Coit.

LUMINESSEE’s Label and Packaging Designer, Mandy Masciarelli, brought more than 20 years of experience to the project. (She is pictured to the right of Luminessee CEO Pamela Snyder in the adjoining image.)

Mandy’s exceptional peek-a-boo design, shows the famous Coit Tower, like a ghost of Lillie’s wild past, through the liquid spirits contained within the bottle.

This bottle solution captures the imagination and appreciation of the millennial target audience, as do the canned cocktail version.

Following the peek-a-boo Coit Tower bottle design, LUMINESSEE helped launch the new brand and:

  Created a site architecture and user interface to smoothly guide site visitors through the buying process

  Created and implemented a comprehensive, website design strategic plan

  Designed interactive graphics based on the brand concept

  Incorporated web best practices while implementing the website to showcase the new brand

  Modified existing client content, such as photos, videos, and copywriting, to integrate with the website design and appeal to the target audience

  Put analytical tracking in place to monitor results and hone-in on the most effective strategies
